Sebesi (also Sebeezee, or 'Bleezie') is an Indonesian island in the Sunda Strait, between Java and Sumatra. It rises to a height of 844 metres (2,769 ft) and lies about 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) north of the Krakatoa Islands; it is the closest large island to Krakatoa, about the same area and height as the remmant of Rakata. Like Krakatoa, it too is volcanic, although there are no dated eruptions known. (A single report of an eruption in 1680 seems to be a confusion with the Krakatoa eruption reported from that year.) Unlike the Krakatoas, Sebesi has permanent streams and is inhabited.

Sebesi was devastated during the 1883 volcanic eruption of Krakatoa. Official records give approximately 3,000 people killed, with 1,000 of these being 'non-residents'.

By 1890, Sebesi was being re-cleared. It is believed that since it lies closer to Sumatra, it has served as a 'stepping stone' for much of the flora andfauna which was re-established at Krakatoa. By the 1920s, settlers had returned, and today Sebesi is virtually completely cultivated, with only a small area at the peak and some mangrove swamps still natural.

VK9MT, Mellish Reef

http://www.vk9mt.com/

Mellish Reef
CQ Zone: 30
IOTA: OC-072
Locator: QH72wo
Of all the reefs in the Coral Sea that fall under Australian jurisdiction Mellish Reef is the most distant, being located approximately 1150km NNE of Brisbane the capital city of Queensland, 1080km East of Cairns, and 1100km West of Port Vila the capital of Vanuatu.

Mellish Reef takes the form of an unusual boomerang-shaped platform around 10 km in length and 3 km across. The surrounding reefs, which enclose a narrow lagoon, are completely submerged or awash at high tide. Near the centre of the lagoon is the only permanent land of the reef — Heralds-Beacon Islet. The island is a small cay measuring 600 m by 120 m, only rising a few meters above the high water mark. It is composed largely of sand, shingle and coral rubble. In the north is a narrow and elongate drying sand bar.

The reef is home to thousands of nesting seabirds of all species, a large population of nocturnal hermit crabs and a myriad of sand flies, ticks and lice.

Prior DX-peditions from Mellish Reef include:
2009 VK9GMW
2002 VK9ML
1993 VK9MM
1978 VK9ZR
1972 VK9JW

Operating guidelines
We want you in our log, so please help us by following these guidelines.

Our goal is to give as many as possible an "All Time New One"

1. If you cannot hear us - please don't call. Wait until propagation and conditions favor your QTH for one or more of the Bands / Modes.
2. Unless you hear otherwise from the Operator, we will ALWAYS be operating in SPLIT MODE throughout the DXpedition.
3. Listen to the Operator for RX frequencies (e.g., "up 5 to 10", or "listening on 7.155", etc.)
4. You have two ears and one mouth, so please try to listen more, talk less. Be patient.
5. During SSB pileups, please use common phonetics, do NOT call continually without listening or call over a station being worked.
6. During ALL pileups, listen for YOUR call on the comeback. Trust that we have two good ears.
7. We're not impressed by those who add to the QRM by constantly calling out of turn.
8. Please do not Tune Up on any of our TX frequencies or any of our RX slots!
9. If we ask for "EU" only or "QRP only" or any other specific request, please QRX.
10. Resist those "insurance" QSOs. We want to maximize unique QSOs, not Dupes.
11. Whenever possible, we will try to listen in the General portion of the band.
12. Do not repeat our call sign, we know it.
Remember: We want you in our log. Please help us get you there.

VK5CE/4 DXpedition to OC-255

http://oc255.blogspot.co.uk/

On the air very soon

Hi everyone

I'm hot, tired, dehydrated (despite drinking many litres of water), sweaty and dirty..... but the campsite is now up and it's just gone sunset here.

I'll be 14260 by 0915 UTC. I'm just running 100w tonight to run the generator in

73s de Craig VK5CE/4

Red Island is in site – literally!

This afternoon I flew into Bamaga where I met up with one of my support people who took me 8km north to the coastal location of Seisia. It’s so exciting to be in far north Queensland again in such a remote location. Seisia will be my mainland staging base and supply town. Fingers crossed that all of the equipment has survived the freight and flights and is in working order.

I have just a little bit of mobile phone and internet coverage on the beach in Seisia which means I can give you my latest update before departing for the island in the morning. As I write this it’s 7:30pm local time. Tomorrow is going to be a big day to set up the camp on this uninhabited island. In the morning I’ll get fuel, food and water to keep me alive and sustained. The threat of crocodiles is something I’ll need to take seriously and I’ll be trying to get the antennas as close to the water’s edge as possible while trying to have the tent as far away as possible.

People need to remember that there’ll be times that I need to go off the air for 15-30 minutes to work on the generator or to repair the tent during a storm. There may be times of the day that I won’t be on air in case of bad weather (especially electrical storms) or if the supply boat comes to bring me fuel, water and ice.
I’m really hoping that I have internet mobile coverage somewhere on the island not too far from the campsite, I’ve been told this be possible if I’m lucky. If I don’t, then each day at noon I may arrange for my support guy to pick me up from the island, go to Seisia, get more ice, fuel, etc supplies and bring my laptop to upload files onto ClubLog to avoid people doing dupes. Only time will tell what’ll I’ll end up doin. There are so many variables and potential things to go wrong on this DXpedition – so fingers crossed!

Looking at the tiny island from the mainland it has a surprisingly large hill on it and so I need to carefully pick my spot to avoid signals being blocked. We’re probably going to land and set up camp on the northern side so that’ll provide a clear water short path to JA, W/VE and Europe. It may not great for long path Europe but don’t worry guys because here in the tropics the best European path is 15m and 20m short path especially at this time of the year. This is opposite to my OC-261 DXpedition in southern Australia where long path 20m was ideal and short path was almost non-existent. If I find a good spot with clear water short path then it will allow me to look for JA and W/VE on 15m in my mornings at 2100-0200 UTC, visit the mainland, return as quickly as possible around 0400/0500 UTC to try for 20m for long path Europe and short path west coast W/VE and South America. Then it’s the long shift from around 0800 UTC working 15m JA/Europe and venturing to 20m by 1000 UTC to look for short path W/VE coast to coast and then Europeans will start arriving around 1200 UTC. Remember Europe to stand by for North America in the 1000-1400 UTC period when I ask, but don’t worry as 20m to Europe should be open past 1600 UTC if conditions are good.

Who knows, we’ll just have to see what ionospheric and environmental conditions throw at us in this wild adventure over the next 6 days.

Currently in Cairns, north Queensland

Hey all you funky island chasers out there.

Today I flew from Adelaide (VK5) to Sydney (VK2) and then Sydney (VK2) to Cairns (VK4) in north Queensland. Tomorrow I fly from Cairns to Bamaga in far far far far north Queensland.

Cairns airport involved a little drama this afternoon as the airline misplaced the box with the 2 x 12m Spiderbeam fibreglass poles. No poles = NO antennas. Fortunately they eventually turned up.

So this evening I'm in beautiful tropical north Queensland. Around 5pm I walked along the esplanade in Cairns and the weather is a real shock to the system as it's hot and really humid in the tropics and Red Island is further north so it'll be even more humid. But hey what's a wild tropical adventure without some adversity.

I'm staying at the same hotel tonight that Michelle my wife and I stayed at the night before doing the Fitzroy Island OC-172 VK4LDX/P DXpedition in October 2010. So it's nice to be here again exactly three years later to get ready for this IOTA DXpedition. I'm trying to enjoy the luxuries of life right now to prepare myself for 5 nights on an uninhabited island in the tropics by myself with no resources. So it's been an enjoyable night of beer, beer, beef, beer and beer at the Steak on the Lake anti-vegetarian establishment, it's so hot and humid dining outside that you need to drink quickly before your beer gets warm :)

OK now to business. On Wednesday I'll be on the island and I think it'll take all day to go there and set up camp. I need to take my time so that the tent and antennas can survive rain and wind and thunderstorms that are likely to visit me, nothing worse than tent repairs at 200am in the morning during a storm. So don't expect me on the air early on Wednesday October 15, the goal is to be operational by sunset which is 0800 UTC. To give people the best chance of working me, I'm only going to operate on 2 bands and I'll focus on 20m as much as I can. I'll only go to 15m when 20m is not productive.

Antennas will again be a 15m and 20m vertical dipole at the high tide mark - the 20m vertical dipole was incredible for North America at the VK5CE/P OC-261 DXpedition in August and Red Island will be a MUCH better location. Frequencies will be 14260 and 21260 +/- interference and listening up 5.

After having done DXpeditions to other northern Australian IOTAs of OC-171, OC-172, OC-138 and OC-185 I know what the band conditions will be like. I would say that my operating will be as follows:

0000-0200 on 15m (10:00am-12:00pm)
0200-0400 maintaining antenna/generator/campsite/mealtime and doing club log (12:00pm-2:00pm)
0400-0800 on 20m (2:00pm-6:00pm)
0800-0900 meal break and generator re-fill (6:00pm-7:00pm)
0900-1600 on 20m (7:00pm-2:00am)
16:00-2100 sleep (2:00am-7:00am)
21:00-0000 on 15m (7:00am-10:00)

this is my preferred scheduled to give east coast north America and Europe on 20m and JA and west coast North America on 15m the best chance to get in the log. In the 0400-1400 UTC period I will only go on 15m if 20m is dead.

Freight logistics on track

Hi everyone

It's only a few weeks to go. There are many logistics involved with this DXpedition as I need to organise not only the radio equipment but also all aspects of life support. Red Island is totally uninhabited and so everything from food, water, medical, generator, fuel, shelter, etc also needs to be arranged.

Much of the equipment has arrived in Bamaga in far north Queensland including the amplifier, amp power supply and generator. There are just a couple more boxes to express freight up there.

I've arranged with the two air lines I'm flying with to take extra baggage, in particular the Spiderbeam poles for the 20m and 15m vertical dipoles.

Next IOTA DXpedition announced – October 16-21

For all of my previous IOTA DXpeditions there have been some inhabitants or facilities on the island. For instance Magnetic Island was a popular tourist island with a daily ferry service, Fitzroy Island had a resort on it with an almost daily Fast Catamaran service and Horn Island had a pub and motel with a daily flight there. Then I started to get a little more adventurous, Bremer Island had accommodation there but it needed a charter boat for the visit and Flinders Island also had accommodation but it needed a single engine charter plane to get there.

It was time to draw inspiration from my collection of DXpedition DVDs by K4UEE and 9V1YC, etc and go somewhere that was totally uninhabited, that was in a very remote part of Australia and was in high demand and hadn’t been activated for a long time. OC-255 fitted these criteria. Red Island is totally uninhabited, is off the far north tip of Queensland, is claimed by only 15.4% of IOTA claimants and was only ever activated once for four days back in 2002.

Originally the VK5CE/P OC-261 Flinders Island trip was going to be my only DXpedition of 2013. However I’d been planning the logistics of visiting OC-255 for a while and so when the opportunity came to do this, the planning and research had already been done. I had to do this planning in secret from my lovely XYL as I figured there was only a 1 in a 100 chance of doing this IOTA DXpedition – she’s understanding, but not THAT understanding. Once she agreed for me to go to OC-255 she realised there had been a conspiracy all year to try and make 2 DXpeditions a reality in 2013 J

The journey to get to this island is a long one from my home in Middleton, South Australia. It requires two flights totalling 4400 km or a bit over 7000 miles from Adelaide to Cairns and then Cairns to Bamaga. From Bamaga I’ll have a local 4WD and fishing boat operator act as my DXpedition support person. He will pick me up from the Bamaga air strip, take me to the island, help me set up the tent and antenna and every couple of days he’ll visit the island with fuel and water and just to make sure I’m safe.

There’s an air of excitement about being on my rarest IOTA yet especially as it is on a deserted island, while at the same time there’s a feeling of nervousness as this is the first trip where I’ve really had to take safety and life support into consideration.

The cost of this DXpedition will be high and so the support of sponsors is really appreciated. If you work me as VK5CE/P on Flinders Island in August, please note that all donations will be used to fund this IOTA DXpedition to Red Island.

Benin DXpedition 2013

http://dxpedition.be/Benin.html

News (10 oktober/2013) :
Plans are; shortly after i arrive in Togo 19/nov/2013, i go to Benin by taxi+guide to collect my TY1 callsign papers, wich seems to be ready. One problem is that the ATRPT did not want to give the license and callsign papers to my African contact person. I have to go myself.
Could be they need some extra information or $
I found a nice QTH in Benin to put up my antenna's and shack.
When everthing is sorted out (callsign, license ), i start with my TY dxpedition, and move from myr Togo qth to a new qth in Benin to start my TY dx-pedition.

if everthing is going according my plans, i will be in Benin from 21 november untill 3 december on 40/30/20/17/15/12/10/6 ssb/cw/rtty

Operator: Wim, ON6DX
QSL via: ON6DX

Equipment:
Icom IC-7000,
1/4 verticals with many ground radials for 30&40m,
MicroHAM Micro-Keyer RTTY-CW
Wintest logging program.
6-band SP7IDX Broadband hexbeam (G3TXQ design)

Operating Frequenties and Modes :

Important: in SSB, Please call me ONLY with the INTERNATIONAL SPELLING CODE
That means Alfa,bravo,chralie,delta,echo,foxtrot,golf,hotel,india,julliet,kilo,lima,mike,november,oscar,papa,etc..
This is much easier to copy for me in the pile up !

SUPPORT:
Managing a dxpedition to Benin is a expensive thing to do for me.
I travel with my XYL and she also has to carry lots of equipment.
Alone it is almost not possible to take al these antenna's,liniar,2x50m coax, pwr supply, trx, micro keyer, laptops,6m supporting mast etc.
Especially for the extra-suitcases costs, extra traveling coast from Togo to Benin and back to obain the callsign taking the extra's of my budget.
Every single donation permits to carry a better setup.
Please feel free, but think about support the effort!
Thanks for the support.

2. unique island, just small island with two countries, likewise papua, borneo, timor
3. outer island as "wawasan nusantara" concept  http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daftar_pulau_terluar_Indonesia

Sebatik Island

Sebatik Island (Pulau Sebatik) is an island off the eastern coast of Borneo, partly within Indonesiaand partly within Malaysia. It has an area of approximately 452.2 square kilometres (281,000 mi).[1][2]The minimum distance between Sebatik Island and the mainland of Borneo is about 1 kilometre (0.62 mi).[3]

Sebatik Island lies between Tawau Bay (Teluk Tawau) to the north and Sebuku Bay (Teluk Sebuku) to the south. The city of Tawau lies in Sabah just to the north. The island is bisected at roughly 4° 10' North by the Indonesia-Malaysia border - the northern part belongs to Sabah, Malaysia (Sebatik Malaysia) while the southern part belongs to North Kalimantan (previously East Kalimantan),Indonesia (Sebatik Indonesia).

Sebatik Malaysia has a population estimated to be approximately 25,000, as opposed to approximately 80,000 people in Sebatik Indonesia.[4]

The demarcated international border between Malaysia and Indonesia stops at the eastern edge of Sebatik Island, so that the ownership of Unarang Rock and the maritime area located to the east of Sebatik is unclear.[5] This is one of the reasons why the Ambalat region waters and crude oil deposits east of Sebatik Island have been the center of an active maritime dispute between Indonesia and Malaysia since March 2005. The ambiguity of the border at the eastern edge is sometimes attributed as the reason the two nearby islands of Sipadan and Ligitan were determined to be part of Malaysia, rather than Indonesia.[5]

While there are border guards on the island, there is currently no immigration office, no customs house, no barbed wire fence and no walls demarcating the border. Instead, the only evidence of a border are the concrete piles buried every kilometer from east to west.[6]

Sebatik Island was one of the places in which heavy fighting took place between Indonesian troops and Malaysian troops during the 1963Indonesia Malaysia Confrontation.

The North Borneo Timbers company operated a logging concession on the island until the 1980s and its mostly expatriate employees lived in a self-contained community in Wallace Bay. Sebatik Malaysia is within the administrative district of Tawau. For electoral purposes, Sebatik falls within the parliamentary constituency of Kalabakan and the state assembly district of Sebatik.

Sitangkai Indonesia (at its closest points) is approximately 175 kilometres (109 mi) to Sitangkai, Tawi-Tawi, Philippines, the second closest point between the two countries after the Miangas island in North Sulawesi.[7]

North Borneo is a province in Indonesia which is located in the northern part of the island of Borneo . The province borders with neighboring countries, namely the State of Sabah andSarawak , East Malaysia .

Currently, the North Kalimantan is Indonesia's youngest province, a provincial official endorsed in a plenary session of the House of Representatives on October 25, 2012 under Law No. 20 of 2012. [1] North Borneo government infrastructure is still in the process of preparation which is planned to be the longest in the 1 year.

Historically the countries in the north of the island of Borneo, covering Sarawak , Brunei and Sabah is the region most of the country mandala Sultanate of Brunei mandala countries bordering the Kingdom of Berau . [2] Since the Hindu to the period before the establishment of the Sultanate of Bulungan, the area now become the province of North Borneo to the areaKinabatangan in Sabah is a region of the eastern countries Berau mandala called Nagri Marancang. [3] However, recently most of northern Nagri Marancang (aka eastern Sabah) regardless of Berau since claimed as territory Brunei mandala, then by Brunei awarded to the Sultanate of Sulu and Suluk tribe began to settle in most areas. [4] Then the British colonial master Nagri Marancang north and south Nagri Dutch master Marancang (now the province Kaltara). [5] [6]

Territory of North Borneo became a province of the former territories Bulungan Sultanate and the Kingdom Tidung. Both, the domestic and foreign Bulungan Sultanate kingdom Tidung a former area part of the state-owned Berau who have broken away, but then a local expansion of the influence of the Sultanate of Sulu. [7] However, the Kingdom of Berau in Hikayat Banjarincluding one vazal or state mandala in the country the Sultanate of Banjar since ancient times, when it was still called the Sultanate of Banjar Empire State Dipa (Hindu period). [8] Until 1850, the country Bulungan and country Tidung still claimed as state land mandala subordinates in the Sultanate of Sulu [former subordinate Brunei ]. [9] However, in 1853, domestic and foreign Bulungan Tidung already included in the Dutch East Indies or back part of the Berau. [10] Although recent Bulungan country under the rule of the Prince of Brunei and Tidung country under the rule of law which is the king Tidung Prince of Sulu, but both countries are still included in the state mandala Berau. Under an agreement between the state of the Sultanate of Banjar with the Dutch VOC was delivered on August 13 1787 and May 4 1826 , it became the law of the country of the Sultanate of Banjar Dutch VOC protectorate area and some parts of the region and state who claimed to be a former vazal Banjar submitted as Dutch VOC property , the Dutch Company makes its borders obtained from Banjar based on the agreement that the western region is the state of Sintang , County of Lawai and regions of barley (part of state Kotawaringin ) while the eastern region is the state of Berau. [11 ] The state of Berau include country sultanate Powder Mountain , the country sultanate Tanjung / Sambaliung , country sultanate Bulungan & District Tidung aka former kingdom Tidung were abolished in 1916 . [12]Based on the map of the Dutch East Indies in 1878 when it showed the position of the border is much more to the north of Kaltara border-Sabah today, since covering all villages Tidung in the region of Tawau .
