HISTORY OF THE ISLAND Cézembre ( DIFM MA008 - EU157)

As the crow flies, 4 km separate the island of Saint-Malo. 750 m long and 250 m wide, she lost all vegetation from the bombings of the last war, the countless craters bombs and shells still give it a lunar appearance. If, on the north, the cliffs impressive plunge into the sea, the south side of the island, facing the coast slopes gently down to the water in a pleasant sandy beach.Fellow gulls nesting on the cliffs, rabbits live in the undisputed masters of the island, deserted in winter. It is difficult to imagine today that Cézembre was long inhabited, she received the religious communities and, more later, garrisons. Until the IX th century prairie around him, and it was only in XV th century that the last land was submerged, making Cézembre a real island. At that time, a priest of Saint-Malo to built a small oratory. The faithful of the coast made it a holy place and stayed tuned to this isolated piece of land. A hundred monks Cordeliers of the Observance, came Brehat, then settled there, building a large monastery. Cézembre was covered little by little chapels and received, throughout the XVI th and XVII th centuries, famous people, including François I er and Charles IX. The rich library of the monastery housed valuable incunabula, which unfortunately disappeared in 1944 during the fire of Saint-Malo, where they had been transferred.
World War II forever changed Cézembre. Between late July and early September 1944, a barrage of bombs and shells rained down on the small island, which holds the sad record of being the most bombed place, relative to its size, the entire Second World War. Occupied by the German army, Cézembre was pounded by U.S. troops: despite the air raids, land and naval intense, the Germans resisted more than a month before traveling. It is said that some of them did never recover from this infernal wave that had swept over their heads. After the Liberation, Cézembre not cleared, was declared a prohibited area, which did not prevent fishermen and curious to dock there. Even today, only one zone is open to holidaymakers ...But that does not hesitate to cross the rusty barbed wire from which to discover carcasses of military vehicles and gutted bunkers, buried under the brambles.

HISTORY OF THE ISLAND HARBOUR (DIFM MA025 - EU157)

The Harbour Island is a rocky islet fortified in front of Dinard, 3 km in front of Saint Malo.
The fort was built during the XVII th and XVIII th centuries at the initiative of military engineers Prestre Sebastien de Vauban and Simeon Garangeau. It protects two passes for access to St Malo and participates in the defense system of the port of St Malo which also includes the highlights of The Conchée, Petit Bé and Fort National.
The fort has lost all military function and is now owned by private individuals. One time it belonged to actor Alain Delon.
