The Yasme Award and The Yasme Supreme Award

Yasme Foundation Announces Awards, Expanded List of Eligible Call Signs

The Yasme Foundation currently offers two awards. The Yasme Award, in the form of a handsome plaque, is offered to those radio amateurs who submit proof of 30 QSOs with Yasme officials and DXpeditions that have at least one Yasme official as a participant. The Yasme Supreme Award is in the form of a representation of the YASME boat used by Danny Weil in his around-the-world DXpedition. It is available to those who submit proof of 60 QSOs with Yasme officials and DXpeditions with a Yasme official as a participant. These awards are available to qualifying applicants at no cost. After a year-long evaluation of the rules, the Yasme Board of Directors has revised the rules for those call signs that may be used to qualify for the two awards, with many new ones added to the list. The Yasme Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation organized to conduct scientific and educational projects related to Amateur Radio, including DXing and the introduction and promotion of Amateur Radio in underdeveloped countries.

"Danny Weil was a pioneer of what is now known as the 'DXpedition.' While not the first to DXpedition, Danny was one of the first to travel to more than one location to operate, and to travel from place to place - often solo in a sailboat and lugging hundreds of pounds of radio equipment - specifically to provide DXers with a 'new one.' Lloyd and Iris Colvin perfected the DXpedition and took it into the modern age in the 1970s and 1980s, with operations from more than 100 countries, using modern transport methods and state-of-the-art radio equipment.

"YASME was both the name of Danny Weil's boat, and the name of the not-for-profit foundation that was created in 1959 to provide financial and logistical support for the travels of Weil, the Colvins, and others." --Scott Robbins, W4PA

Yasme Awards Call Sign Directory

This is a directory of YASME call signs/operations/operators, listing the call sign, date of operation, and the principle operator. The original version of this list appeared in the K6PBT SH/INFO database for PacketCluster.

Many of the DXpeditions were done by Lloyd (W6KG) and Iris (W6QL) Colvin. Lloyd, W6KG, became a Silent Key in December 1993, (see call TA1/W6QL). Iris, W6QL, became a Silent Key February 18, 1998. Lloyd and Iris logged more than a million contacts during their world travels, collecting one of the largest QSL collections in the world.

* Logs for certain DXpeditions are held by the Yasme QSL Manager. If you have worked a DX call marked with an asterisk (*), you may request a QSL card for your records and the YASME Awards. (See Awards page)
